In the locked house of memory
old spirits rise, sing rockabye.
Rounded vowels soften our sleep
oohing like pine wind
sweeping though our dreams
stardusting us with longing.
Lingering traces hibernate
in soundless sleep,
until whining cicada summers
toss us awake
hot sweating
waiting for footsteps
for thunder drumming.
Twilight, starlight, moonlight, midnight,
dusky hours of deep dark.
Nap, nod, drowse,
sink to soft rest and surface
always to the subtle base
background rhythm of kitchen nightlife.
In these muted echoes of night
is formed our daylight.
January moon's
too bright light
crackles along winter air
with sharp undercurrents of sound.
Static, sulfur smell of a match
just scratched awake,
splat of a flyswatter,
a cough, a sneeze
one final yawning, Sweet dreams,
and Turn out the light.
